Cylindrical roller bearing
Cylindrical roller bearings are roller bearings with cylindrical rollers as rolling elements. On account of the larger contact area (line contact) compared with balls (point contact), cylindrical roller bearings are able to support higher radial loads with high rigidity.
Flanges attached at the side allow cylindrical roller bearings to support axial loads as well.
Depending on the arrangement of these flanges, a distinction is made between the NU, NJ, NUP and N designs.
The NU version is suitable as a loose bearing, whereas NUP can be used as a fixed bearing.
NJ can only support axial loads in one direction.
A further advantage of single-row cylindrical roller bearings is the possibility of mounting outer race and inner race separately. Modern cylindrical roller bearings have a logarithmic raceway profile (slightly curved). This means that excessive edge pressing caused by misalignment or shaft bending is avoided at both ends of the cylindrical rollers. In addition, this design permits a load-bearing, hydro-dynamic lubricating film to be established between the rolling elements and raceways. The result is reduced friction combined with high load-bearing capacity.
Modern cylindrical roller bearings (with an E added to the product designation) also have larger rollers compared with the conventional design.
